# Circle of Competence

The Circle of Competence emphasizes understanding and operating within one's areas of expertise and knowledge.

Imagine a circle. Inside this circle is everything you're knowledgeable about and skilled in; this is your Circle of Competence. Outside this circle is everything else. The idea, popularized by Warren Buffett in the context of investing, is that individuals and businesses thrive when they stick to areas they deeply understand and are (or should be) specially cautious or avoid areas beyond their expertise. Crucially, it's not just about knowing what you're competent in but also recognizing what lies outside of your circle — what you might know less of. You might notice some similarities with last week’s content. The Circle of Competence is a mental heuristic critical to (amongst other things) avoiding falling into the Dunning-Kruger Effect.

**Investing**

An investor might excel in understanding technology stocks but struggle with pharmaceuticals. By sticking to tech investments, they maximize their chances of success. Why? Their deep understanding of the tech industry informs their choices, while they acknowledge pharmaceuticals fall outside their Circle of Competence.
